  • 3 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 small yellow onion, peeled and minced
  • 1⁄4 lb. cremini or other white mushrooms, coarsely chopped
  • 3⁄4 lb. ground veal
  • 1⁄4 lb. ground pork
  • 2 tbsp. tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp. sugar
  • pinches freshly grated nutmeg
  • 1⁄4 cup loosely packed fresh basil, chopped
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper
